Curriculum Developer

Dr. Uli Scheck was born in Germany and moved to Canada in 1979. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Mannheim (Germany) and completed both his MA (80) and PhD (84) at the University of Waterloo specializing in German Romantic and contemporary literature.

Uli has held faculty and administrative positions at Mount Allison University, Queen’s University, and Thompson Rivers University. He has authored and edited over a dozen books, and has published numerous refereed articles, reference works and reviews. Throughout his career he has been committed to teaching German and to encourage students to participate in international exchanges.

Uli has always loved playing keyboards and performing live with bands in Germany, Ontario and British Columbia. He retired in July 2019 and now enjoys writing and recording songs, becoming a more accomplished photographer, and developing online teaching materials.

Course Consultant

Dr. Franziska Karlen was born and raised in Bern, Switzerland where she completed her teacher education. Growing up in the heart of Europe allowed her to become fluent in four languages: Swiss-German, German, French and English.

In 1991, Fränzi and her family moved to Canada. Over the years, Fränzi taught students from Kindergarten to Graduate School. Fränzi holds a Master’s Degree in Education in Teaching from Gonzaga University and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Change from Fielding Graduate University.

Fränzi is happiest when she is able to teach German and French to open-minded, hard-working students. Dr. Fränzi is the proud mom of two kids and considers herself privileged to live in beautiful Kamloops, BC, on the unceded land of the Secwepmec people.
